The 2019 universitywide Commencement ceremony will take place at the Royal Farms Arena on Thursday, May 23. Candidate lineup begins at 12:30 p.m. Procession begins at 1:30 p.m.

Before Commencement Checklist

  • Be ready for line up. Graduates must report by 12:30 p.m. to the lower level of the arena to line up for the procession. Download the list of lineup sections by school and degree program, along with a map of the arena for reference. 


  • Apply to Graduate: Deadline for undergraduate registration was February 10th.  If you have not applied to graduate please contact today. Visit the Office of the Registrar’s website for more information.
  • RSVP for Commencement: Let us know of your plans to participate in the universitywide ceremony by completing the online RSVP form.

  • Record your name to ensure it is pronounced properly when you cross the stage. You should have received an email from NameCoach (the recording site) in late February, if you did not receive this email please contact the Commencement Office.
  • Order your Cap and Gown: Be sure to purchase a cap and gown to participate in this year’s ceremony. Order online at Bachelor’s regalia will be shipped to your home for a $15.95 shipping and handling fee. The deadline to order your bachelor’s cap and gown is Saturday, April 13, 2019.
  • Attend Grad Fair to order your cap and gown, personalized announcements, and diploma frames. Grad Fair takes place on April 11 to 13 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Johns Hopkins Barnes and Noble at St. Paul and 33rd Streets.

  • Have your Senior Portrait taken. GradImages® will be onsite taking portraits at the Grad Fair 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., April 11 to 13 at the Johns Hopkins Barnes and Noble. More information about portraits can be found here.
  • Select a Diploma Frame (14″x 17″) at the Grad Fair, April 11 to 13 or order online at Johns Hopkins Barnes and Noble.
  • Donate to the Senior Class Gift Campaign.
  • Photo of gold class ring that reads "The Johns Hopkins University Baltimore 1876," with the seal. Be part of the JHU Ring Tradition: You may order online at Balfour or 1-877-225-3687. At representative will be available during the Grad Fair April 12 to 14 to place an order for the class ring.
  • Customize and purchase your graduation announcements from CB Graduation Announcements.
  • Sign up for Senior Week activities.
  • Stay informed by following us on Instagram and Facebook and continue to visit the Commencement website for updates.
  • Reserve Hotel Rooms: Make sure parents and other special guests have a place to stay. Visit our Hotel page for a list of hotels offering special rates to JHU grads and their guests.
  • Return your library books and pay your parking tickets!

Day of Commencement Checklist

  • Arrive On Time: Candidates must be inside the Royal Farms Arena by 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 23, to begin lining up.
  • Keep Your Feet Happy: Wear comfortable footwear; you will be walking and standing for long periods of time.
  • Leave These Things at Home: Backpacks, food and drink are not permitted in the arena. Bags and purses larger than 13 5/8” x 15 1/4” are also not permitted. All bags and purses could be searched upon entering the arena.
  • Don’t Forget to Eat: Make reservations at a restaurant near the arena.
